What You Might Need for Your Child’s First Day at School

Publicado por Frances Ban en

The first day of school is one of those milestone moments that sneaks up on you. One minute you’re packing tiny shoes, the next you’re standing at the school gate wondering how time moved so fast. While every school and child is a little different, having a few key things ready can make that first day feel calmer—for both of you.

Here’s a practical (and parent-approved) guide to what you might need.

1. A Comfortable Backpack

Not too big, not too small—just right for little shoulders. Look for adjustable straps, a lightweight design, and a zip they can manage independently. Bonus points if it’s something they’re excited to wear.

2. Lunchbox & Water Bottle

Most schools will let you know their food guidelines in advance, but generally:

  • An easy-to-open lunchbox
  • A leak-proof water bottle
  • Familiar foods your child already enjoys

The first day isn’t the time to trial anything too adventurous—comfort and confidence win here.

3. School Uniform (or Comfy Clothes)

Make sure everything is washed, labelled, and laid out the night before. Comfortable shoes are especially important—there’s a lot of walking, running, and exploring on day one.

4. A Hat (and Sometimes a Jumper)

Depending on the season, a sun hat or a warm layer is often essential. Schools usually have specific requirements, so double-check what’s needed.

5. Clearly Labelled Everything

Shoes. Jumpers. Lunchboxes. Hats.

If it can be taken off or put down, label it. Future-you (and the lost property box) will thank you.

6. A Familiar Comfort Item (If Allowed)

Some schools allow a small comfort item for the first few weeks—a bracelet, a family photo in the bag, or something small that reminds them of home. It can make a big difference in helping them feel secure.

7. A Calm Morning Plan

This one isn’t something you pack, but it matters just as much:

  • Allow extra time
  • Keep the morning relaxed
  • Talk positively about the day ahead

Your calm sets the tone for theirs.

8. A Big Dose of Encouragement

A simple “I can’t wait to hear all about your day” or “You’re going to have so much fun” can go a long way. Confidence is contagious.

One Last (Very Important) Thing…

Pack tissues.

Not for your child—they’ll be far too busy.

They’re for you… standing at the gate, waving bravely, wondering how your tiny human suddenly became a school kid. 💛
